Rhode Island Lawmakers Eyeing Mobile Sports Betting
On Wednesday, a Rhode Island Senate committee passed a new sports betting bill.
RI SB 37 is a bill that was introduced mid-January and it aims to legalize and regulate mobile sports betting. The state already has land-based sports wagering and now it wants to expand it by including mobile wagering. A vote on the full Senate floor could happen as soon as Tuesday.
Motivation For Mobile Wagering
Currently, in-person sports wagering can only be done in one of the two Twin River casinos. The facilities in these casinos are rather small compared to others in the country so visitors have to deal with long lines. Expanding to mobile wagering will allow more people to bet on sports and generate more profits for the state.
Written by Senate President Dominick Ruggerio, the legislation would mean additional opportunities for Rhode Island residents.
“Expanding to mobile gaming would provide a convenient option for those wishing to enjoy this form of entertainment, and open up the economic benefits beyond the walls of Twin River,” says Ruggerio. “Revenue from sports gaming supports critical state services, like road and bridge repairs, education and human services. This revenue offsets reliance on taxes for state needs.”
What Will Happen If RI SB 37 Becomes Law
The current plan to implement mobile sports gambling is for people to go to one of the Twin River facilities and sign up for mobile wagering there. After they register their phones, bettors can freely use wager on sports on their mobile devices so long they are within Rhode Island state borders.
It seems unlikely that RI SB 37 will fail to pass. The state has already implemented land-based sports gambling in the state so it makes sense for them to expand on it by allowing mobile sports betting.
